Cheng Residence

The house is set in one of the most desirable neighbourhoods of Vancouver with an excellent view of the entire downtown peninsula, this skyline vista framed by the North Shore Mountains, the two blending into the dynamic balance of man-made and natural so beloved by Cheng.

Site conditions drove the defining design decisions. The integration of natural light deep within the floor plans is an ongoing theme of Cheng's residential work, here achieved with an airy and largely open glass staircase under a skylight at mid-plan. 

The back yard features a garage pavilion, it narrows the space down but this architecturally rich space is a profound tribute to the renewing power of family life as exists as part of the city; Cheng has shaped a zone of privacy that empowers publicness, a home that is as resolutely contemporary as it is at ease with it's neighbours. 

One of Cheng's great architectural skills is balancing this dedication to privacy with one for publicness.
